Cold forging also named cold heading process is one of the new processes for machining less and less cutting metal pressure. It is a kind of molding deformation produced by metal under external force, and the metal volume is redistributed and transferred by means of mould, so as to form the required parts or blank processing method. The cold heading process is most suitable for producing standard fasteners such as bolts, screws, nuts, rivets and pins.

The cold heading is carried out under the condition of normal temperature. The mechanical properties of metal parts can be improved by cold heading. The following table is a comparison of mechanical strength between cold heading bolts and cutting bolts.

It can be seen from the table that, no matter what type of bolt, the tensile strength of the cold heading is about 10% higher than that of the cutting process, and some can even increase by 20%. This is because the metal fibers of the cold heading product will not be cut off, the internal structure of the metal is compacted, and the working hardening is accompanied by the existence of the working hardening phenomenon, so the mechanical properties of the metal are improved.

2. cold heading technology can improve the utilization of material. Taking the cold heading bolt as an example, the material utilization rate of the new process “concave hole” six angle bolts can reach more than 99%. In addition to the loss of material head and tail, no cutting process was achieved. For cutting, the material utilization rate is only 40%. The material utilization rate of the cold heading nut can also reach about 80%, and the material utilization rate of the cutting nut is only 54%.

3. cold heading technology can greatly improve the productivity. If the cold heading nut is compared with the original cutting process, the productivity will be increased by 25~30 times.

4. cold heading process can improve the surface finish and ensure product accuracy. The general smoothness is up to V5, and the special requirement is V6. For large quantities of bolts, nuts and so on, it can completely guarantee its accuracy.

As the cold heading technology has high productivity, good product quality, and I greatly reduces material consumption, reduces production cost and improves labor conditions, it is widely used in the production of mechanical manufacturing, especially standard fasteners, in which the most representative products produced by multi position cold heading machines are bolts,screws and nuts.
